This song began to take shape one day while I was listening to “Oxygène Part 2” by JM Jarre. I wondered what a new-age style song would sound like if structured over percussion inspired by the Costa Rican tambito. Usually, the tambito has a 3/4 rhythmic metric, but I gave it a slight twist, adjusting it to 4/4, basically because I felt it worked better.
I started working on this rhythmic base in 2015. The song progressed and was properly structured by the end of that year. Eventually, I’d return to it, adding or removing elements—the usual process.
Last year, I included several elements to emphasize the rhythmic section (congas, for example) which gave it a sound that, to me, has a very african flavor. The last thing I added was the bass phrasing, which came at a moment when I felt that instrument lacked movement and dynamism.
For the video and the single’s artwork, I used cottonbro’s visual work as a base. Their videos are freely available, and I think their work is brilliant.
The song’s title, “Nymphstory,” emerged at the end of the video`s editing process. It combines the words “nymphs” and “story.” Nymphs are minor deities in Greek mythology. In this particular case, they are forest and water nymphs.
As of writing this post (June 6, 2025), the world seems more turbulent and murky than usual. An old system is falling, and the new one is just a sketch. Historically, these types of changes have always been stained with innocent blood. This time, it seems we’re on the same path. I hope one day these kind of transitions can occur in a way that innocent people don’t pay with their lives. Peace for all.
